Volume calculation is the method used to convert volume to weight to get the volume weight.

To get the volume weight

  • First you must find the volume of the parcel and then multiply this by its length, width and height.
  • You must have the volume in the correct unit of measurement. Bring uses cubic decimetres (dm3). If the measurements are in cm, divide the result by 1000 to get dm3 (the volume of the item).
  • This volume is then divided by a fixed conversion factor of 3.5 for groupage and 3 for part load. You are then left with the weight in kg.

For groupage, we estimate 1 kg for each 3,5 dm3 goods measured according to the greatest length, width and height. Therefore, the volume must be divided by the fixed conversion factor of 3.5.

Groupage calculation example

We have a shipment to be sent from T√łnsberg to Molde, which is a distance of 8 zones. The number of zones can be found in the place and zone overview.

  • The shipment measures (LxWxH) 120x80x90 cm and weighs 220 kg
  • Volume = 120 cm x 80 cm x 90 cm = 864,000 cm3
  • You must divide the result by 1000 to get the volume in dm3
  • 864,000 / 1000 = 864 dm3

Volume weight = Volume 864 / Conversion factor 3.5 = 246.9

The chargeable weight is the heaviest actual/real weight and volume weight and is always rounded up to the nearest whole kg. In this example, the volume weight is highest, so the chargeable weight is 247 kg. You will find the price in the weight interval 226-250.

247 kg to zone 8, costs NOK 1,847.
